Laboratory of Applied Entomology

The Laboratory of Applied Entomology focuses on research in the fields of entomology and acarology as parts of the scientific discipline of plant protection and the branch of agriculture within life sciences. The subject matter of entomology and acarology research is insects and mites that are relevant for the protection of cultivated plants, which include both harmful species (pests of plants and plant products) and beneficial species (parasitoids and predators as agents of biological control of harmful species).

The research activities of the Laboratory have two main aspects. The first one is based on studying insects and mites that are significant for the protection of plants and plant products, and for protecting biodiversity. The other aspect is focused on studying the effects of synthetic and biological pesticides (insecticides and acaricides) on insects and mites which are important for the protection of plants and plant products.

Research work in the Laboratory includes several activities:

  • Study of the biology and ecology of phytophagous insects and mites as economically important pests of cultivated crops and plant products
  • Study of the biology and ecology of insect predators and parasitoids and predatory mites as biological control agents of phytophagous insects and mites
  • Study of the genetic, species and ecosystem biodiversity of insects and mites that are important for plant and biodiversity protection
  • Morphological and molecular characterization of insects and mites, focusing primarily on invasive and newly introduced species
  • Study of insecticide and acaricide toxicity to insects and mites that are significant for plant protection, focusing on analyses of effects of sublethal exposures
  • Characterization of the resistance of insects and mites to insecticides and acaricides that are relevant to plant protection
  • Study of insecticide and acaricide effects on insect and mite populations under practical conditions of plant protection
  • Study of optimized applications of synthetic insecticides and acaricides for the purpose of protecting health and the environment
  • Development of integrated systems of applicable biopesticides (insecticides and acaricides) and biological control agents for the protection of crops and plant products

The Laboratory is engaged in several other fields of expertise:

  • Testing of the biological efficacy of insecticides and acaricides for the purpose of their registration for protection of crops and plant products
  • Testing of population dynamic of insects and mites for monitoring and forcasting purposes regarding plant protection and public health
  • Phytosanitary inspection of infestations of crops and plant products by insects and mites
