The Institute mainly focuses on research in applicable and developmental fields of life sciences, more specifically agriculture as a distinct scientific branch that includes the plant protection disciplines of phytopathology, entomology, agricultural zoology, weed science, plant protection products and toxicology, integral plant protection and protection of stored products.

The Institute is also engaged in providing expert services relating to the registration, trade, application and control of plant protection products, plant health (diagnoses of plant diseases and phytosanitary control of plant materials) and food safety. The Institute uses a single office building of 1378 m2 as its seat, and has the right of use of six hectars of land owned by the Republic of Serbia at the same location.

The Institute has 46 members of employed personnel, 33 of whom are researchers. The research team includes 29 PhD holders and 4 PhD candidates. Regarding research ranks, 8 researchers are principal research fellows, 15 are senior research associates, 6 are research associates, 1 is research assistant and 3 are junior researchers.
